Cullen Rutherford was born in Honnleath, Ferelden at around 9:11 Dragon. He's second of 4 siblings: older sister Mia, young brother Branson and youngest sister Rosalie. Cullen always idealized the Templars in his town and eventually convinced the Knight-Captain and his parents to have him recieve formal training. At age 13 he left his family for the Chantry to begin his new life.

At age 19, Cullen was stationed at the Circle Tower in Kinloch hold. During the Blight, the tower was taken over by blood mages, led by Uldred. He was one of the few survivors of the tragedy - at the same time his parents did not survive the Blight, while his siblings moved to South Reach. After the event, he's sent to Greenfell for rehabilitation but it was short-lived and was quickly sent to Kirkwall to serve under Knight-Commander Meredith. However, Meredith's corruption and eventual downfall causes Cullen to become jaded with the Templar Order and eventually leaves it for good. He's recruited by Seeker Cassandra Pentaghast to join the Inquisition in 9:40 Dragon.
